Restless Leg Syndrome Treatment

What is Restless Legs Syndrome?

According to Wikipedia, “Restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Wittmaack-Ekbom’s syndrome, is a condition that is characterized by an irresistible urge to move one’s body to stop uncomfortable or odd sensations.

Restless legs syndrome most commonly affects the legs, but can also affect the arms or torso, and even phantom limbs. Moving the affected body part modulates the sensations, providing temporary relief.

Restless legs syndrome causes a sensation in the legs or arms that can most closely be compared to a burning, itching, or tickling sensation in the muscles. Some controversy surrounds the marketing of drug treatments for Restless legs syndrome.

Restless legs syndrome is a ‘spectrum’ disease with some people experiencing only a minor annoyance and others experiencing major issues.”

How do I treat the Restless Legs Syndrome?

The Natural Way

A diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables with protein derived mainly from white meat like fish and chicken is a heart friendly diet that will help to support healthy and efficient circulation throughout the body, including the legs.

If you feel restless for fast food, high in fat, sugar, salt and synthetic ingredients, spare a thought for your heart before you give in! Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated drinks, alcohol and cigarettes.

Putting your legs up now and then to relax is not a bad thing, but make sure to include regular exercise every day – even if it is just walking that extra block to work or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Your legs will thank you for it if you rest less and walk more.

Natural remedies can also be of great benefit in supporting healthy limbs and cardiovascular functioning without the risk of side effects or addiction.

In the middle ages, how did they treat mentally ill people?

I’m just wondering. I was reading some book about autism, and I wonder how they handled it in the middle ages, and other eras before now. I read on wikipedia that the first asylum was build sometime in the 1200′s. and that the mentally ill were treated with drugs, baths, music and activities

if this is so, then why didn’t the average working man in these times pretend to be mentally ill to receive special treatment instead of busting his hump working for a living.
I would’ve done that.
Well, if I wasn’t obsessed with god, which I might’ve been considering in the middle ages, people had little self value and lived for god.

Anyway,
does anybody know how the mentally ill/disabled were treated in the past? Wikipedia is very helpful but I want some insight from anyone who’s studied it.
I always imagined they would say something like, “HES A WITCH!” or “HES GONE MAD! OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!!”

The mentally ill were locked up in institutions or asylums…..basically a warehouse for those deemed mad/insane. London’s Bethlehem Royal Hosptital, better known as Bedlam, was founded in 1247, making it one of the oldest institutions of its kind. The term “bedlam” became associated with chaos, confusion, and poor treatment, which was the general attitude toward mental illness. As time went on, more and more treatments were used to “cure” mental illness. Mental illness was treated with purges, bloodlettings, whippings and fastings. These patients were left in closets, animal barns, caged or chained to walls and the hospital charged admissions for public viewings.

Other treatments used was a near drowning device – placing the patient into a coffin then submerging the coffin underwater then reviving the patient (if they could). Remove the blood from the head was another “cure” by bleeding patients with knives or leeches, removing organs like tonsils, stomach or spleen…basically torture, physically and mentally to try and “cure” the patient. The mortality rate was very high. This is why the average working man never pretended to be mad..they would be mad if they did. :)
