Malaria is a word that many people associate with parks in Africa. However, only two national parks in South Africa is in an area of malaria risk and the Kruger National Park and Mapungubwe National Park, although in both places, the risk is generally low. Historically, there have been cases of malaria in other parks, but there are cases of malaria from urban Europe and other areas without risk. But for all purposes Kruger Park is the risk of malaria in the SANParks' set-up.
prophylactic against malaria are recommended for visitors to Kruger. The period of highest risk is between December and April (late the rainy season). A hotline against malaria is available 24 hours at +27 (0) 82 234 1800 to give a detailed explanation on risk and advice on precautionary measures. Visitors who wish to take prophylaxis should consult a doctor or travel clinic know recognized the recommended drugs, as certain products cause nausea, hallucinations or other negative side effects with certain people.
Very often (particularly after periods of low rainfall) the malaria risk in Kruger is very low. Many people choose not to take prophylaxis and avoidance, rather of being bitten. The most vulnerable times are between dusk and dawn. People are advised to stay indoors during these periods, or cover exposed skin with light clothing or insect repellent. The ankles are the most critical sector. Burning mosquito coils and ensuring screens are closed marked other preventive measures.
Although malaria prophylaxis is recommended, no prophylactic is foolproof and any person exhibiting flu-like symptoms 7 to 20 days (or more) after being in malaria areas should be tested immediately for malaria, until symptoms clear or an alternative diagnosis is made. It is important to educate physicians who have been in a malaria area so avoid misdiagnosis.
On the issue of prophylaxis, no drug is 100% guaranteed, but a combination of choroquine (taken first week, one week before) and Paludrine – appears (every two days days before) that the most recommended prophylaxis. Mefloquine is a unique alternative. These are available in pharmacies in Johannesburg and en route to the park (and perhaps sell some of the camps left in the park). However, since we must take over one week in advance if you decide to use, buy in South Africa would be late, unless you will spend time elsewhere in the country (which is free of malaria).
The threat of malaria should not affect your decision to enjoy the experience and the Kruger Park, but it is something we must be alert and aware of being exposed.
Note: Most types of mosquito carry the malaria plasmodium and if one is bitten does not mean you will get the disease. Only Anopheles mosquitoes carrying the plasmodium, and only if they have already fed on an infected host. Since the presence of people with the plasmodium in the blood in the park is significantly reduced compared with earlier periods, the risk is further reduced. One reason for this reduction is that the housing units in the parks are sprayed periodically throughout the year. Now that international campaigns see treatment taking place in neighboring Mozambique and Swaziland, the emergence of malaria has been reduced further.

28 Days (Special Edition) $2.93 To appreciate 28 Days, it’s best to be thankful that director Betty Thomas hasn’t forced Sandra Bullock into a remake of Clean and Sober. Instead Thomas has balanced her comedic sensibility (evident in Dr. Dolittle and Private Parts) with the seriousness of alcoholism and substance abuse, and she succeeds without compromising the gravity of the subject matter. Some critics have scoffed at the mov… |
