Helping family/friends understand eating disorder?
Hi Everyone,
I’m a 22 year old female who has had an eating disorder for about 2 almost 3 years. I was first diagnosed with Anorexia, then it quickly switched to massive Bulimia. I’m in treatment at our local hospital from time to time when it really gets unbearable (and my nutrient levels take a dive), but I still to this day can’t get anyone to understand it.
Everyone in my family thinks that eating disorders are “All in your head” and that I’m just “Trying to get attention” and that I choose not to eat, which if anyone has an eating disorder knows thats farther from the truth. They say that I choose this just like if a person was to choose to do drugs, they could choose to do it or not to do it…
My question is, what can I do to tell/show them that im not choosing to be sick? Are there any websites/written work that would help?
I’m just fusterated out of my mind, any help would be appricated! I just want them to not think im making this all up!

The best thing that your family and friends can do is to educate themselves about eating disorders. Check at the hospital and see if they offer any counseling for your family or any group support. My friends daughter had an eating disorder and we all went to an orientation at the hospital that was very informative and helped her family and friends to understand that this is not something that she chose to do.
