Drug Rehabs

“I am an addict. I have a disease. I am powerless against my addiction. I will have this addiction the rest of my life. Relapse is part of recovery.” These words or others very much like them are at the root of traditional 12-step rehab ‘treatment’. Unfortunately, these words and the indoctrination that follows are creating addicts – not curing them.
A book could be written on the matter as there are so many negative facets to 12 step drug and Alcohol Rehab programs, but here we will touch on just two issues. First and maybe most importantly, is the lie of putting a label on someone and making them profess to being an addict. This is wholly destructive because it cements the idea that one “is” something other than just himself. For example, we can all admit to having lapses in judgment during our lives where we may have lied, cheated, been lazy, ate poorly, ad infinitum. But should we have to walk around in life and say “I am a liar” or “I am a criminal”?
Next is the matter of accepting the notion of addiction being a disease. For over a decade I have worked with many doctors (for themselves and their patients) and most will admit that there is no real evidence of addiction being a disease. But they will say that it is a convenient label so that ‘treatment’ can continue on the person for a lifetime. These same doctors point out why there will never be a ‘cure’ for heart disease or cancer – the money is in the treatment, not the cure.
Non 12 step drug Rehab Programs are diametrically opposed to all of this. They do not have you stand before others in group therapy to say you are an addict. This is because they do not believe in you being an addict! Instead, they believe you have ‘decided’ to use drugs or alcohol in order to block out pain, emotion, upsets and unhappiness. For this reason, they work with you on a one-on-one, cognitive therapy approach to get to underlying issues that, once resolved, allows you to move on from that destructive behavior.
And regarding the whole disease theory, they debunk this every day. Non 12 step Rehab Centers know there is no medical test to prove anything close to addiction being a disease. The best measure of this is that they can document curing people of their alcohol and drug addictions without relapse. If it were some incurable disease (as 12 step facilities would have us believe), how is this possible? Of course, not everyone is cured. But when you consider most of these non disease based rehab programs have 70-90% success rates, it’s a wonder that 12-step therapy is still being used at all.
When traditional 12 step rehabs began telling patients that they were powerless and could not beat their addictions, the whole concept should have been thrown out with the trash. It was not. As a result, 12 step treatment is probably the most damaging thing to anyone with a drug or alcohol problem. The reason is that the philosophy itself creates the ‘idea’ of being an addict for life.
Thankfully, Non 12 step drug rehab centers exist to help undo this damage and, if we are lucky, to create a paradigm shift for the next generation.
Personally knowing the effects drug and alcohol has on an individual and having overcome the battle of addiction, Steven R. Tucker has since been an addiction counselor for non-12 step drug rehab organizations. Creating awareness of the effectiveness of non-traditional alternative rehab programs to help others nationwide achieve a true drug-free life.
