10 Most Common Health Side Effects of Prescription Drug Abuse

Prescription drug abuse is one of the most common amongst drug users today. Getting hooked onto prescription drugs happens so silently so much so that the user does not even realise it till it is too late. Most people also seem to be under the false notion that being addicted to prescription drugs is ‘safer’ than being addicted to regular drugs. Unfortunately this could not be farther from the truth. Prescription drugs are as harmful.

Depressants and their side effects

People hooked onto to depressants and then stopping without the guidance of the appropriate medical supervision can go into seizures. This kind of medication can also be lethal when taken in combination with other components like allergy medication or alcohol. It can reduce a person’s heart rate and breathing, which can subsequently lead to death.

Heart failure

Heart failure and irregularity in heartbeats is also a common side effect of prescription drug abuse. In addition to this there could also be a dangerously high rise in the body temperature of the user.

Pain Killers and their short term side effects

Pain killers are some of the most common prescription drugs that people tend to abuse. When taken in small doses, they could result in drowsiness, lack of concentration, nausea, dizziness, droopy eyelids and slow breathing. Large doses however can be lethal. Constriction of the pupils, cold skin that is appears blue and moist and even death could be some of the side effects.

Long term side effects of pain killers

Taking pain killers over a prolonged period of time can also have various health side effects. Some of these would include moodiness, irregularities in menstrual cycles, constricted pupils and even constipation.

Dependence on pain killers

It is very easy to become dependent on pain killers. Soon the user finds that he or she requires higher and higher quantities in order to feel its effects. When the user tries to stop using the drugs they could suffer from bone pain, intense anxiety, diarrhea, tremors, sweating, vomiting etc.

Sleeping pills and their side effects

Another kind of prescription drug that is often abused is the sleeping pills. Usage of these drugs is known to lower inhibitions, reduce anxiety and give the user a feeling of well being. On the down side they induce low blood pressure, slow down the pulse rate, interfere with coordination, concentration, respiration and can even cause death.

Effect on pregnant women

Like all other drugs, prescription drug abuse can be very harmful to pregnant women, leading to miscarriages, low weight babies and early labor.

Changes in personality

People addicted to prescription drugs also face changes in their personality. They tend to be withdrawn from their social circles, i.e. loved ones, friends and associates. Embarrassment about the dependence could also be a cause for their withdrawal.

Forgetfulness and fatigue

One of the earliest signs of prescription drug abuse is constant fatigue. Addiction can also lead to absent mindedness and forgetfulness due to his lethargy.

Defensiveness

Lastly but also equally important is the signs of the user being defensive. A person dependent on prescription medication will never admit to it. He or she will insist that they still require the medication and the altercation could even get ugly for the accuser.

When a Man Loves a Woman

When a Man Loves a Woman

When a Man Loves a Woman is a dumb title (not another classic pop song, please) for a very smart movie. 28 Days (Special Edition)

$2.96

To appreciate 28 Days, it’s best to be thankful that director Betty Thomas hasn’t forced Sandra Bullock into a remake of Clean and Sober. Instead Thomas has balanced her comedic sensibility (evident in Dr. Dolittle and Private Parts) with the seriousness of alcoholism and substance abuse, and she succeeds without compromising the gravity of the subject matter. Some critics have scoffed at the mov…
