I saw the headline about promising research being done that would help get rid of tinnitus and found the article very interesting. Last month the National Institute of Health granted a Dallas researcher $1.7 million to do further investigation as to the possibility of nerve stimulation offering a permanent cure for tinnitus.
Testing will be done to determine if vagus nerve stimulation can retrain the brain to not pay attention to certain nerve signals that simulate ringing. Previous testing has shown that vagus nerve stimulation or VNS appeared to reverse the effects of tinnitus.
Clinical trials will be done using VNS to treat humans subjects for tinnitus symptoms. VNS has been successful in treating epilepsy, depression and other neurological problems.
The treatment is quite invasive now and part of the research will be to develop a less invasive procedure. The hope is that it could be delivered via a needle but for now that is down the road.
There is definitely hope here but researchers say that half the therapies that have been shown to be successful in animals are not successful in humans. The majority of the testing so far has been on rats.
It would truly be wonderful if this research succeeded and allowed us to get rid of tinnitus permanently. I’ve dealt with tinnitus or ringing of the ears for many years. My search for a cure has resulted in reading everything I can about the condition.
The belief has been that there is no cure for tinnitus and that the best that can be done is to take drugs, go for counseling or try to mask the noises in our heads. I found relief in natural, holistic methods that are easy and safe.
I hope that this research proves successful but my search for help has made the noises that once drove me crazy much softer and in the background. The side effect of these holistic remedies is that I’m healthier than before the onset of tinnitus.
I drink very little alcohol and coffee and my diet is much more vegetable and fruit based with an emphasis on white meat. I have found that certain supplements such as Gingko biloba have the ability to increase the circulation in the brain and this has an effect on the inner ear.
I meditate every day and have a more tolerant and relaxed attitude towards others and life in general. It’s enabled me to have a better mental attitude towards my tinnitus.
I hope this research results in a breakthrough giving tinnitus sufferers a permanent cure. I have more information on my experiences in trying to get rid of tinnitus. I haven’t cured my condition but it is so much improved that I’m living a totally normal life.
