What are the pros and cons of raising cigarettes and alcohol taxes?
Who is benefiting from this? And how much? How is this gonna help the average american citizen and the poor? Will all the government services improve if they raise the cigarette and alcohol taxes? How much will this help balance the budge cause they are broke!
First off it’s chopping our nose off to spite your face. The higher the taxes the more people will smuggle those items and the more lucrtive smuggling will become thus meaning the tax increase will actually reduce the amount of taxes brought in.
The biggest losers are the poor. They are more likely than any other group to smoke and drink. As such sin taxes are a direct assault on the poor.
As for quiting. Most Americans have worse things to worry about than cancer 40 years from now. Especially the poor are likely to die of something else. So it has zero health benefit on top of the adverse effects it has on revenue and the poor.
