Alcohol Rehab Philadelphia

If you remember learning about ancient civilizations in history class, you may remember that wine was always a huge part of a civilian’s diet. I’m sure that much of that was because grapes were plentiful and without refrigeration etc., the juice from the grapes quickly fermented–resulting in wine (alcohol).

Of course many experts believe that there is a huge difference in the alcohol content of ancient wine vs. today’s alcoholic beverages — but whatever the case may be, alcohol has long been a tradition of ancient and modern cultures. Largely due to the fact that alcohol has the capability of altering one’s mood. For most of us in modern times, this means that alcohol has the power to change our mood or numb us from our current state of being. A lot of us like that. With the increasing stress and complete insanity of the world growing year after year, decade after decade, it’s no wonder that a large part of the population wants to just be numb.

Look at how we reacted during the period of prohibition in America. Organized crime flourished and people either bought into that illegal system or they learned how to make “moonshine” in their own backyards or basements. In fact, one of my uncles was able to support some of my family’s migration from the south to the north in the 1930′s because he made “moonshine” for an organized crime faction in Philadelphia. Suffice it to say — we all went a little bit crazy without our legal liquor. So of course that had to stop, and back to legal it became.

So I said all of that to really give you the backdrop of how powerful alcohol really is to the history of America, and really the history of the world. It has always been around, and will continue to be around, so as a society I think it is extremely important to learn how to manage it appropriately, OR how to eliminate completely from your life.

1. Your relationship with alcohol can and will affect your career, your role as a parent, your relationships with significant others, your relationships with friends and family.

2. Your relationship with alcohol can ultimately affect how you view yourself in the world. If you need alcohol to deal with life — your opinion of yourself will probably remain very low because you will feel guilty that you use this “crutch” of sorts.

3. Your relationship with alcohol can cost you big successes and big rewards from life. It can rob you of everything and everyone if your relationship is not a healthy one.

4. You can lose the respect of your children, friends and family if your relationship with alcohol is bad. How do you respect someone who allows something or someone else to control them? To dictate what they will say or what they will do.

5. Your relationship with alcohol may be perceived as a disease, or you may have a predisposition to it based on genetics — but that’s not an excuse. You can change your relationship with alcohol and not allow it to dominate your life. It is possible and don’t let any “expert” tell you different. Why? We were all born with free will. That’s what is so great about being a human being born in this day and age. In the midst of all the “noise” of life — we have FREE WILL. You can choose everyday – all day — to have a healthy relationship with alcohol or NO relationship at all. It is your choice.

When a Man Loves a Woman

When a Man Loves a Woman

$3.28

When a Man Loves a Woman is a dumb title (not another classic pop song, please) for a very smart movie. A kind of gender-switch take on The Lost Weekend, it’s about a woman (Meg Ryan) whose alcoholism almost destroys her family. That may sound like just another TV movie, but When a Man Loves a Woman is so authentic in detail and emotion, that everything about it seems fresh, urgent, and engrossing…

28 Days (Special Edition)

28 Days (Special Edition)

$2.99

To appreciate 28 Days, it’s best to be thankful that director Betty Thomas hasn’t forced Sandra Bullock into a remake of Clean and Sober. Instead Thomas has balanced her comedic sensibility (evident in Dr. Dolittle and Private Parts) with the seriousness of alcoholism and substance abuse, and she succeeds without compromising the gravity of the subject matter. Some critics have scoffed at the mov…
