What most of you think that homelessness in America?

I am a volunteer at a rescue mission in Las Vegas, NV. This rescue mission in particular has an excellent drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Which is how I got involved with him, made myself for control of entry and complete the rehabilitation program. Since I completed this program have continued to volunteer and help the Mission with its outreach homeless population in Las Vegas. I am from NC, and while homelessness is increasingly widespread throughout the country never expereienced as I have here. I know there are some people who are homeless just because they want to be. They do not want to live by the rules, pay bills, or be responsible for anything. However, there many people in the streets who have made bad decisions and too much alcohol or drugs ruin their lives, or have mental problems. When you look at a homeless person, what see? Do not see a person at all, or just someone taking up space. Want to do something to help, and if so what are you doing?

Mental health problems, instead of addictions (although there is a large overlap) are the main reason for homelessness. Escaping domestic violence is a factor of a few who think but it is the main reason for homelessness minors. Thirty-eight percent say they have used alcohol problems. Twenty-six percent report other problems, drug use. Thirty-nine percent report some form of mental health problem (self-reported), and 20 to 25 percent meet the criteria for serious mental illness. Their symptoms are often active and untreated, which makes it extremely difficult for them to meet basic needs for food, shelter and safety. These individuals are poor, and many are not receiving benefits to which they may be eligible. Up to 50 percent have mental disorders co-occurring illness and substance use. People with serious mental illness are more difficult to exit homelessness than others. They are homeless more often and for longer periods time than other homeless populations. Many have taken to the streets for years. Homelessness can http://mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/publications/allpubs/homelessness/ happen to anyone, people with mental health and / or addiction problems are less likely to recover.
