Alcohol Recovery

Help me understand changes a recovering alcohol addict goes through and the difficulties they face?
What physical changes does a person go through during recovery from alcohol and/or drugs? How does their body crave the alcohol or drug they are recovering from? Can someone also help me understand by explaining the different physiological difficulties an addict has while going through recovery?
Anyone who can give the most detailed and accurate helpful answers, with possibly a link to a reference gets 10pts. Please help!
I can’t comment on drugs in general as symptoms would vary depending on the drug(s) etc. However, the withdrawal symptons from alcohol can vary from person to person also and depends on the amount of alcohol that used to be consumed and over what period. However, some typical symptoms withdrawing from alcohol include (but are not limited to): the shakes, cravings, anxiety, depression, headache, sweating, nausea, insomnia etc.
Through personal experience (my ex is an alcoholic), the effects of withdrawing from alcohol have a big impact on them mentally. Anxiety and depression can be very severe as can dillusion. The mental cravings they experience are often too much to handle (mentally, not so much physically) which is why many alcoholics relapse time and time again.
