Alcohol Withdrawal Detox

Abstinence from alcohol (ethyl alcohol) is significantly different from withdrawal or detoxification of almost all other drugs. The difference? Withdrawal and detoxification alcohol, in itself, can be fatal.

The stereotypical image of a heroin addict detoxification in a cheap motel (as is often portrayed in film and television), leads people to believe that the withdrawal of opioids are fatal. Having first hand experience opiate withdrawal, I can say without reservation that during the first 72 hours, death seems an attractive option. The reality, however, is very different. It is very rare for the withdrawal of heroin or other opiates be fatal.

When death is attributed to an addiction to heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine or any drug of abuse, in most cases already there were serious underlying health problems. These pre-existing conditions were aggravated by an addiction just active. However, a "relatively healthy" alcohol, which has no serious health problems, a significant risk of death when alcohol is removed. If not handled in a diligent and correct the effects direct withdrawal can be fatal. And it is quiet, the kind of sleep of death. Various organs are rapidly swelling, while others do just the opposite, restricting blood flow in both directions. At the same time, the body cavities filled with fluid, a normal, 175-180 lbs man can achieve 250, 275, even 300 pounds before a vital organ, finally, and thank God, just give up. It is a painful "ugly" way to go makes it less attractive for the complete evacuation of liquid and solid at the time of death.

While the body is an organ begins closing time (Which can take hours or even days), the mind somehow knows what lies ahead, and opts for an early departure. Delirium Tremens (DT), alzheimers alcoholic and hallucinations that communication, let alone recognition, almost impossible. If a family member, friend, spouse or loved one is in alcoholism or about late-stage or about his attempt to detox fifth, tenth or twentieth, make peace with the spirits and say what to say … today.

There few prescription drugs that may pose similar risks of death during the withdrawal process. These drugs, particularly barbiturates and benzodiazepines, cheat the brain by "acting as" the alcohol. They do this by their mechanism of action and its similarity to the alcohol.

One of the Top 3 alcohol effects stimulation increases GABA drinkers, which in turn initiates the Central Nervous System depression. As the consumption of a person continues, with an increase frequency of alcohol consumption and the amount of alcohol consumed, these receptors become desensitized and start slowly disappearing. The small number of receptors causes a greater degree of tolerance and ultimately physical dependence. Often, when alcohol consumption is stopped, especially when stopped abruptly, the central nervous system drinkers literally come under attack from uncontrolled fire synapses in the brain. This results in symptoms such as anxiety and panic tremors, hallucinations, delirium tremens (DT) and life threatening seizures. These symptoms may continue until such time that the cause of heart failure.

Not all bad news.

Each day without alcohol allows cells to regenerate the liver to rebuild the mind, literally, of course. The body and central nervous system begin to reduce tolerance and increase the role of GABA. Vital organs no longer bombarded by a liquid that is a cousin of the painting, just little to stop the inflammation, becoming more "normal" size. And today there are many more options then just a few years ago and today are well trained, knowledgeable physicians can safely and effectively manage a alcohol withdrawal and detoxification.

For those under the care of a trained doctor or accredited facility detoxification, acute withdrawal symptoms usually disappear after 1-3 weeks, although less severe symptoms such as insomnia and feelings of anxiety may follow as a year or more.

The key is abstinence. Abstinence and time.

Because after the most dangerous of the symptoms have passed, the strongest drug for alcohol withdrawal is time itself.
